Juliana Pupazzoni Burman
- Principal & Author

Juliana is the author of the Fra Amici Italian Series, including the renowned Fra Amici and Fra Amici 2 Italian Courses and Italian for Travellers. Fra Amici was first published in 1998 and it has been sold in several countries. She is also the author of the Fra Amici Italian Series Black Line Photocopying Copymasters for Teachers. All her books have now been Euro-Updated and are in their 2005/2006 Editions. Her books and kits have been on display at the London Book Fair, Book Expo America, the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Australian Book Fair. She has also presented papers about her Fra Amici Italian Series at the Biennial Conferences of the AFMLTA (Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers’ Associations).

Juliana has been a very successful teacher of Italian for many years. She has had extensive experience in teaching both adults and young people. This practical experience is reflected in her lively, user-friendly publications.

Juliana believes that language learning should be enjoyable, because people learn more and remember more when they are having fun.

Juliana’s experience has been first in secondary schools (including over ten years as Head of Department, Foreign Languages, at St Thomas Aquinas College, now Chisholm Catholic College) and then with adult classes (for University of Western Australia Extension Classes and in her own Italian Language and Food Classes). She served on various committees for the former Secondary Education Authority, including the Italian Syllabus Committee, Working Group Writing Assessment Guidelines and the Italian Moderating Panel. Her Italian Language and Food Classes have been very popular since they started in September 1994.

Juliana has been interested in Italy, Italian language, Italian life and culture and authentic Italian cooking all her life. She grew up bilingually in an Italian family, speaking Italian and English. Initially, she learned to cook from her grandmother and her mother, who were both fabulous cooks. Then she spent many years researching Italian cooking and experimenting with the various styles of Italian cooking. She has adapted some traditional Italian recipes to make them less fattening. Her Fra Amici books contain one of her authentic Italian recipes in every communication unit.

Juliana has been teaching authentic Italian cooking in her popular Italian Language and Food Classes since September 1994. These classes have been written up by Australian House and Garden, Australian Table Magazine and the Perth Weekly. She was also a guest chef for the Sunday Times’ Fifth Anniversary of CheckoutCelebration. She has recently started teaching Authentic Italian Cooking as a Corporate Team-Building Programme for major companies (such as Shell Development Australia, for a group including the top people in the company in Australia mining engineers, geologists, geophysicists, cartographers, etc.)

Juliana grew up bilingually in an Italian family in Perth, Western Australia. She was educated at the University of Western Australia where she obtained a BA (Hons.) and a Dip.Ed. In addition to teaching Italian for many years, Juliana has also taught French and English. She is married to Dr Ronald Burman, an astrophysicist at the University of Western Australia. They have a son, Geoffrey. Juliana’s biography was included in the First and Second Editions of Who’s Who in Australia and the Far East.
