Italian Courses Perth With Fra Amici, the focus is on practical conversation topics. This is based half on everyday language and half on travel topics. We cover listening and speaking, reading and writing - but the main emphasis is on conversation, especially for beginners.

At all classes, we start off by listening to conversations on the CDs, then after some explanations and class practice, we have our own practice conversations in twos and threes. We learn a great deal while having fun at the same time!


Fra Amici courses are designed for everyone. They are modular, meaning that you may join the program as a complete beginner or at an intermediate or advanced level.

  • The 6 week beginners 'Module 1' course is $390 and is ideal for holiday and business travellers who need a basic knowledge of Italian.
  • This is the first of three modules in the Complete Beginners Course which you can do in just 12 weeks. This course takes you to the start of the intermediate level.
  • Further modules can be taken, from intermediate to advanced level, with a choice of start dates.
  • There are daytime, evening and weekend class options.
  • Many students take the combination food and language courses.
  • The classes are held around a big table in author Juliana Pupazzoni Burman's home in City Beach, WA.

The courses are based upon the renowned Australian-Italian learning resource Fra Amici ("Amongst Friends"). This provides a platform for many secondary and adult educational classes throughout Australia.

The complete beginners course is in three modules and is suitable for business and holiday travellers as well as general Italian students.

The first module is a six week course and covers the following subjects:

  • Meeting People
  • Numbers and Money
  • Ordering Food and Drink
  • Buying a Train Ticket
  • Checking into an hotel
  • Survival Expressions

The second module is a three week course:

  • Ordering a Meal at a restaurant
  • Buying our own Food
  • Shopping essentials - Shoes, Bags, Souvenirs, Photo processing etc

The combination of these two modules (9 weeks in total) are often sufficient for many travellers' needs.

The third module takes students from beginner to intermediate level:

  • We complete the shopping topic
  • We talk about ourselves - work, family, the things we like, our daily lives
  • There is a focus on conversation: telephone calls, invitations, travel and everyday topics
  • We look at basic grammar topics to help us use Italian more easily.

Intermediate Classes are divided into 5 Modules. Each module is a 6 week course. If you are progressing from the Fra Amici beginner course, the transition will be simple. If you are returning to Italian after a break, we suggest that you contact us to talk through your needs. We can then help you select the best module.

There are 3 intermediate-advanced modules, and a further 3 advanced modules. Again, each module is initially a 6 week course, but any module may be extended if the class wishes to spend more time on those topics or at that level.

Depending on how much Italian you already know, please contact us and we can and work out which module is likely to be a good starting off point for you. If you enrol in a module and it's the wrong course for you, it's easy for you to switch to a different module until you find a level at which you feel comfortable. Italian Language and Food Classes in Perth

All courses are available as language only or language plus food. The latter combines learning Italian with a cooking demonstration which we enjoy in a "Mid-Week" dinner (usually a main course plus a quick first course or dessert).

As a delightful finale to a Complete Beginners Course, I am offering some special Saturday courses:

  • Saturday afternoon FRA AMICI Conversation CLUB (conversation enrichment course)
  • Saturday evening CUCINA CLUB sessions, with an Italian gourmet cookery class and complete Italian dinner.
The FRA AMICI Conversation CLUB and the CUCINA CLUB are designed especially for people who have already done a Beginners 5-6 week course (Group 1) or 11-12 week course (Group 2). The FRA AMICI CLUB is held on a Saturday afternoon, from 2:30 pm until 5:00 pm, with a coffee break.

If the people in the conversation class would like to continue into the evening with a special CUCINA CLUB Italian gourmet cookery class and complete Italian dinner (three or four courses, depending on the menu), which starts at 5:00 pm and finishes at approximately 10:00 pm, this can be arranged beforehand.

People can come just to the conversation class or to the CUCINA CLUB Italian cookery class and dinner or to both. At the CUCINA CLUB we have fun using easy, informal conversational Italian and learning the Italian names of ingredients and some basic cooking terms while we are cooking, eating and studying the recipes in Italian. You can come to as many FRA AMICI CLUB and / or CUCINA CLUB sessions as you wish.

CUCINA CLUB sessions ($185 per session) will really suit those people interested in learning more about authentic Italian gourmet cooking. These sessions can be “hands on” for those people who would like to participate in the actual cooking with me. Others may just prefer to watch.
